I love a cozy comfort meal this time of year, especially as we head into St. Patrick’s Day. One of our favorite hearty dinners is Cottage Pie, a classic dish made with seasoned beef, vegetables, and a creamy mashed potato topping baked until golden and bubbly.
I recently got this beautiful Hot Dish baking pan from Great Jones to try out, and it turned out to be the perfect dish for this cozy meal. I thought it would be fun to share a little about the dish itself, along with the recipe we used and how the meal turned out.
This post includes a gifted product. Great Jones kindly sent me their Hot Dish to try in my kitchen, and I’m excited to share how we used it for this cozy family meal. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Cozy Cottage Pie for St. Patrick’s Day
Cottage Pie is one of those simple, classic meals that just feels comforting and nostalgic. It’s similar to Shepherd’s Pie, but traditionally made with ground beef instead of lamb—making it a really approachable option for everyday cooking.
There’s something about a warm, hearty dish like this that brings everyone to the table. The rich, savory filling paired with creamy mashed potatoes on top is the kind of combination that never gets old. It’s filling, family-friendly, and made with simple ingredients you probably already have on hand.
It’s the kind of meal that’s perfect for a chilly evening, a cozy weekend at home, or even a simple way to make St. Patrick’s Day feel a little festive without a lot of extra effort. I especially love meals like this that can be prepped ahead of time and baked when you’re ready—it just makes dinnertime feel a little more manageable.
And honestly, anything that can be baked and served all in one dish (and still look beautiful on the table) is a win in my book.
The Cottage Pie Recipe We Used
For this meal, we followed the Cottage Pie recipe from Tastes Better From Scratch.
Cottage Pie
This easy Cottage Pie recipe from Tastes Better from Scratch has a flavorful gravy with ground beef, ground sausage, and vegetables topped with mashed potatoes and cheese.
A couple small tweaks we made:
We used ground beef instead of sausage.
We added cream cheese to the mashed potatoes instead of milk for an extra creamy topping.
It turned out rich, comforting, and absolutely delicious!
Cooking with the Great Jones Hot Dish
The Great Jones Hot Dish is a thoughtfully designed ceramic baking dish that’s perfect for casseroles, baked pasta, cottage pie, desserts, and so much more—but what really sets it apart is how it blends everyday function with beautiful, intentional design.
Great Jones is known for creating cookware that feels approachable, joyful, and actually made for real life. Their pieces are designed by women, for home cooks, with a focus on making time in the kitchen feel a little more fun and a lot less intimidating—which I love.
What makes this dish stand out:
A modern, colorful design that’s truly oven-to-table (no need to transfer to a serving dish)
A generous size that’s perfect for feeding a family or bringing a meal to share
High-quality ceramic that bakes evenly and holds heat well
Sturdy, easy-to-grip handles that make it practical for everyday use
A glazed finish that makes cleanup surprisingly easy
I used this Hot Dish to make our Cottage Pie, and it baked everything evenly while still giving us that perfectly golden top layer. And honestly, I love that it’s pretty enough to place right on the table—it makes a simple meal feel a little more special without any extra effort.
Why I Love a Good Baking Dish
A good baking dish is one of those kitchen staples you end up reaching for again and again—especially in busy seasons when you just need something simple, reliable, and family-friendly.
It’s the kind of piece that works just as well for weeknight dinners as it does for sharing a meal with friends or bringing something to a gathering. I love having a dish like this on hand because it makes it so easy to throw together a meal, bake it, and serve it all in one place.
Dishes like this are great for:
casseroles
baked pasta
enchiladas
shepherd’s pie
desserts
make-ahead freezer meals
It’s also great for prepping a meal earlier in the day and popping it in the oven later—something I find myself doing often with kids and a full schedule.
Having a durable, versatile baking dish like this really simplifies cooking. It’s one of those pieces that quietly becomes a go-to in your kitchen because it just works for so many different meals.
