There’s always a moment near the end of the school year when I start thinking:
“Okay… how are we going to survive summer with everyone home all day?” 😂
As much as I love slower mornings, spontaneous outings, and making summer memories with my kids, I also know that I personally thrive with a little structure and routine—especially as a work-from-home mom trying to juggle client work, content creation, meals, activities, and two young kids home full-time.
Over the past few summers, I’ve learned that we don’t need a super strict schedule to have a good summer… but we do need a flexible rhythm to help our days flow a little smoother and keep everyone’s sanity intact (mine included). This year, I’m focusing on creating simple routines, intentional moments together, and easy weekly themes that help guide our days without making summer feel overplanned or overwhelming.
If you’re heading into summer with preschoolers or young kids at home and wondering how to balance flexibility with structure, I hope this post gives you some encouragement and practical ideas!
Why I Need a Summer Routine as a Work-from-Home Mom
One thing I’ve learned about myself is that I enjoy summer so much more when our days have a little bit of predictability. Not because I want every hour planned out—but because having a simple routine helps everyone know what to expect and helps me avoid feeling completely overwhelmed by lunchtime.
During the school year, our days naturally have structure built into them. But once summer starts, it’s easy for routines to disappear completely, which can quickly turn into too much screen time, overstimulation, constant snacking, sibling arguments, and a mom who feels like she can never catch up.
For our family, having a flexible daily schedule gives us:
intentional time together
outdoor play built into the day
room for spontaneous outings
protected quiet time for rest and independent play
and dedicated work time for me in the afternoons
The biggest goal for me this summer isn’t perfection—it’s creating a rhythm that supports our family while still leaving room for fun, flexibility, special events, and slower days at home.
How I Came Up with Our Summer Daily Schedule
When I planned our summer routine, I tried to build it around our family’s natural rhythms instead of forcing an unrealistic Pinterest-perfect schedule.
My kids naturally wake up early, so I leaned into quiet independent play in the mornings before I’m fully awake. We also do best when we get dressed and start our day fairly early, so I created a morning block for breakfast, Bible time, crafts, worksheets, and simple themed activities before the heat of the day sets in.
I also knew I needed to intentionally protect a daily quiet time block in the afternoons so I can stay on top of work while the kids rest, play independently, or enjoy some screen time. That one part of our schedule honestly helps the rest of the day feel so much more manageable for me.
Instead of planning every minute of every day, I created a routine with flexible time blocks:
morning connection time
themed activities
outdoor play
outings
quiet time
free play
family evenings
This allows us to adapt based on:
weather
appointments
vacations
energy levels
special events
and honestly… attitudes 😂
What Is “Theme Week Summer”?
One thing that has made summer feel extra fun for our family over the past few years is something I call Theme Week Summer.
Each week has a simple theme—like Art & Creativity, Ocean & Sea Life, Sports & Games, or Christmas in July—and I loosely build some of our crafts, books, snacks, outings, and activities around that theme.
It’s definitely not meant to be complicated or expensive. Most weeks, it just looks like:
a few library books
a themed snack
a simple craft
maybe one outing or activity
and some intentional moments together
But having a weekly theme helps me:
stay inspired
avoid constantly scrambling for ideas
create memories with the kids
and honestly makes the weeks of summer feel a little more special and intentional
I’ll be sharing more Theme Week Summer ideas throughout the summer, so be sure to browse the related posts below for activity ideas, book lists, snacks, crafts, and more!

Summer with little kids at home can feel equal parts magical and chaotic—and honestly, I think both can be true at the same time. My hope this summer isn’t to create a perfectly scheduled Pinterest-worthy experience every single day. It’s simply to create rhythms that help our family connect, enjoy slower moments together, and make space for both fun and flexibility along the way. If you’re planning your own summer routine this year, I hope these ideas encourage you to keep things simple, realistic, and tailored to what works best for your family.
