pregnancy observations

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve written anything on our blog. Crazy how life seems to get away from you… and I don’t even have any kids to blame it on… yet! That’s right, just a few more months and there will be a little baby boy taking up all of our time. ☺️

The excitement that fills my heart when I get to say “my little boy” is hard to put into words. The first trimester was extremely difficult - I felt like I was sick every night and could barely eat anything in the evenings. In all honesty, I did not enjoy being pregnant in those first few months. But around the 13-14 week mark, those nights of nausea faded away, and within the past two weeks (I’m almost 22 weeks now), I’ve been feeling this little guy moving around more and more. Those little kicks are the most incredible thing I have ever experienced in my life! The other day I even saw those little kicks through my stomach! This little boy is already practicing his soccer kicks.

A few pregnancy observations from the past few weeks:

  • Walking in groups, you can now find me in the back of the pack. Everything just moves slower these days and I can’t keep up, which is not something I am used to!

  • Carrying laundry down the narrow basement steps is a little bit risky. Starting to feel off-balance and a little bit unsteady now.

  • No strange cravings yet, but there are starting to be moments where something sounds particularly good to me. The other night it was oatmeal chocolate-chip cookies and last night it was Olive Garden breadsticks. But I haven’t required Eric to make any special runs to the grocery store… yet! 😉

  • Sleeping requires a learning curve… had to figure out a new way to sleep that doesn’t make my bones sore! Super thankful for a great pregnancy pillow and a selfless husband who has a little less room to sleep. Now to figure out how to keep the leg cramps away…

  • No more Birkenstocks! Sad day… I love those sandals. But my pregnant back does not. So I have instead invested in a fabulous pair of Sanuk sandals, which is a total game changer. Lots of lower back pain issues (walking and sleeping) went away once I stopped wearing my Birks!

  • Maternity clothes are about to become a necessity, but in the meantime, a great belly band is worth the low cost! I’ve been able to keep wearing normal jeans and shorts with the help of this belly band (that way I don’t have to button my normal pants and the belly band will keep everything covered and in place!) I believe the next step will be browsing the local Community Aid for more maternity-specific shirts, though!

  • Nesting is about to become a very real thing! I haven’t had the time or motivation yet to clear out the office and start thinking about the nursery, but once I’m back and settled from our summer trips, I have a feeling that will consume a lot of my free time.

  • Thankful for a new car that is higher up off the ground! It’s getting more and more difficult to get into and out of Eric’s passat, and our (new to us) Touareg is another game changer. Plus, it’s fun to drive and has loads of space for all of our upcoming baby gear! Up next, gotta sell that old Dodge Neon…

  • Can I get a “hallelujah” for air conditioning?! 🙌🏼 Thankful for working A/C units in the house… and in our cars! (last year we went all summer without A/C working in either car… yikes.)

Give me a few more weeks and I’m sure there will be more fun things to add to this list. 🙂 For now, I am rejoicing in the miracle of this little man growing and moving around inside of me. Praying the Lord continues to protect him (and me) as he grows, and that I can learn even now what it looks like to be a patient and prayerful mama. 💙
